classic quotations Mr Butler's Quotations

Mr. Butler's Classic Quotations - Lowell Reese, Editor

Excellent gift for speakers, presenters, all who are lovers of quotations and lovers of wisdom!

"Life is best taught by what is alive." -Goethe

Have you ever wanted to have some colorful story or quotation to help you make a point in conversation to your boss, secretary, office mate, next door neighbor or in your presentation to the board of directors?

Well, now you have it, in the form of Mr. Butler’s Classic Quotations. Be more persuasive, colorful, and insightful the next time you have to make an important point or presentation.

Mr. Butler's Classic Quotations is a collection of quotations on nature as it relates to human behavior. Each entry directly or indirectly refers to a plant or an animal. More than 600 philosophers, scholars, poets and politicians such as Socrates, Plato, Shakespeare, Locke, Lincoln, and Emerson have contributed their advice.

The quotations in this book were selected from the editor's personal collection of more than 25,000 colorful sayings - each involving a plant or an animal - that has been compiled over the past two decades. The book was targeted at Kentucky lobbyists but has great appeal and application to all walks of life for people who persuade.

THE ORIGINS of Mr. Butler's Classic Quotations

It all started in Columbia, South Carolina. During a conversation one day in the office, a colleague said she would pursue a certain project "like a duck on a June bug." We laughed when I asked if that was a South Carolina saying. Whatever its origin, the duck launched a hobby. I began jotting down what people said whenever an animal or plant was used to convey a point.

My 3x5 card stacks grew rapidly with quotations gleaned from personal conversations, movies, poems, novels and newspapers. Then, I really got serious and started buying quotation books. I'm still amazed at how much life there is in language.

At first, I valued my collection simply for its potential utility as a collection of colorful, humorous, picturesque expressions that I might use in speech-making and writing. But over time, these insights slowly changed how I see the world. Not surprising, since it became a collection of some of the best things man has ever said about life. It revealed the oneness of the universe for me as never before. I became keenly aware that all life is bound by the same inviolable law of nature. The same force that rusts iron, ripens corn.

Lowell Reese – Dec 2001

ABOUT THE EDITOR

Lowell Reese grew up in rural Kentucky in the 1940s and 1950s. After earning a history degree at Berea College and second lieutenant's bars at Fort Benning, he served in Vietnam as an infantry officer. After military service and relatively brief interludes with Mobil Oil and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, he settled into a 17-year career as a Chamber of Commerce executive.

ABOUT MR. BUTLER

Poor Richard, of Benjamin Franklin's famous almanac, was a fictional character. John Bartlett of "Familiar Quotations," on the other hand, was real. And so is Mr. Butler, the namesake of our book. Mr. Butler is a black and white longhaired American cat, born in 1986 in Columbia, South Carolina.
